If you’re a working musician, you know that — without fail — there is that joker in every audience who thinks it’s LESS cliché and lame to shout out “Freebird!” than it is to actually play the song. It is one of our primary occupational hazards as a musician and the bane of our existence –– our “cross to bear”, as it were. If I were smart I would play it every single time it’s called out — no matter how many times — and just let mob justice take care of the offenders.
But you know, there are those special nights when the mood is right and the planets align… and magic happens. Much to their surprise! I had one kid approach me after an “incident” and tell me how great it was… he’d “never actually heard the song before.”
I tell you it’s a strange, new world out there my friends.
From a recent performance, here is my four-minute, acoustic performance of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Freebird.” Dave Basti assists me on the cajón.
